Transcendent Coordination
Providence, Probability, and the Logic of Divine Agency in Biblical Narrative
T. A. Croft
What would count as evidence of purposive coordination when the observable events themselves are ordinary? Could a sequence of decisions, delays, obstacles and reversals have significance beyond the intentions of the people taking part? And how might we distinguish a genuinely informative pattern from coincidence, hindsight and selection bias?
Transcendent Coordination develops a rigorous framework for investigating these questions through biblical narrative. It combines close attention to the texts with philosophy of religion, causal explanation, confirmation theory and the comparison of competing hypotheses.
Inside the Book
The analysis follows the relationships between human choices and wider narrative outcomes. Joseph’s passage through betrayal, imprisonment and political responsibility; Ruth’s apparently ordinary path through gleaning and kinship; and other biblical accounts provide different tests of timing, dependence, agency and later disclosure.
The book considers the explanatory reach of ordinary causes alongside the possibility of providential coordination, without treating every narrative development as independent evidence or assuming an extraordinary conclusion at the outset.
A Disciplined Method
The approach distinguishes what the biblical text narrates, what can be established historically and what may reasonably be inferred philosophically. It examines rival explanations, uncertainty, dependence among evidence items, counterfactual questions and the limits of probabilistic claims.
Who May Find It Useful
The book is written for readers interested in philosophical theology, biblical studies, the evidential evaluation of providence and the relationship between ordinary events and claims of divine governance. It welcomes critical examination from both believers and sceptics.
